It has been revealed that £250,000 has been spent on personal injury compensation for claims made to the education authorities of Scotland.
Of this sum, £210,000 was awarded as compensation whilst legal fees accounted for an estimated £40,000.
The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) General Secretary, Ronnie Smith, comments on the compensation cost: “The figure of a quarter of a million pounds paid out as a result of injuries to EIS members over the past year is truly startling. This is a clear sign that not enough is being done in our schools, colleges, and universities to ensure the safety of teaching staff.”
Examination of the figures shows that most of the injuries were caused by slips, trips, and falls, and the EIS believes that properly adhering to Health and Safety Executive guidelines would prevent many of these accident claims.
Three major personal injury compensation awards make up £167,000 of the £210,000 total compensation awarded, and of these two were back injuries caused by slipping. The other large payment was made to a lecturer who suffered serious personal injury caused by exposure to hazardous chemicals.
However, over £10,000 of the personal injury compensation was awarded following assaults on teachers by students. The number of teachers being assaulted rises each year, and the EIS believes that a zero tolerance approach to the problem is essential.
