Personal injury solicitors are in opposition the Association of British Insurer’s (ABI) plans to reform the UK personal injury compensation system. In the new plans lawyers will not be involved in the claim process from the beginning and many trade unions are saying that for the process to work that claims’ solicitors must be involved. The ABI proposes that the claimant fills in an easy to use personal injury claim form and then calls a free helpline. This will take away the cost of using a personal injury solicitor.
Every year the insurance industry spends £2bn on legal costs and fees for claimants. Despite these costs the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (Apil) says that this scheme would leave injured people in the hands of insurers whose main priority was to their shareholders rather than getting accident compensation for people who have been injured through no fault of their own. It is seen as a way for the insurance industry to save money rather than help people to make a justified personal injury claim.
Stephen Haddrill, director general of the ABI, said this about the proposals “I know people will see this as the insurance industry versus the legal community. We are not setting out to attack the legal community. We are looking to get a better and fairer deal for the claimants.”
