Personal injury news
Small claims limit should be increased from £1,000
According to a committee of MPs the claims limit in the small claims court should be raised from £1,000 to around £2,500 for personal injury. The constitutional affairs committee claims that the limit has not kept pace with the rate of inflation. The limit also means that the most minor of personal injury claims fall outside the system and claimants risk incurring costs which are higher than the final settlement.
Chairman of the committee Alan Beith said that it was vitally important that the small claims service was relevant to peoples' needs. People who cannot afford expensive legal representation need access to justice and a means of redress. This is particularly important in the case of personal injury claims.
