Pub workers targeted in second-hand smoke initiative

Pub and bar workers who have been exposed to second-hand smoke are being asked to sign a register in preparation for potential personal injury compensation claims.

Launched by the TUC in conjunction with the GMB trade union, Thompsons law firm and anti-smoking organisation, Fresh, the register is intended to help employees make a claim against the licensee if they find their health is adversely affected in the future.

The North East is initially being targeted by the scheme, but if it proves a success the register could be launched throughout the United Kingdom. As well as being invited to sign the register, pub employees are handed a gas mask-shaped leaflet educating them about the health risks of breathing in other people's smoke.

Discussing the new initiative, Helen Jones from Thompsons said, "Employers who expose their staff to second-hand smoke are potentially in a position whereby employees who become ill as a result of that exposure can make a personal injury claim.

"It is very simple, under the Health & Safety at Work Act, employers have a duty to protect their staff from risks to their health and safety."
