On duty policeman dies in motorcycle accident
PC Kevin Church was killed in a motorcycle accident while on duty in June 2005.
An inquest has revealed how James McGregor, a hospital volunteer, driving to Hemel Hospital pulled out in front of the policeman at a road traffic accident blackspot on Hemel Hempstead Road in Redbourn.
Jennifer Russell, a backseat passenger in McGregor’s car stated: ‘He’d gone out onto the by-pass and I looked up and the next thing I saw was the police motorcycle. It was right by me.’
Onlookers tried to help PC Church but severe personal injuries to the chest and the stomach sustained when the motorbike crashed into the side of the car proved fatal.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission recommended that the motorcycle accident be investigated by Thames Valley Police. It is believed that the motorcycle was travelling at around 20 mph when the accident occurred.
The coronary report showed that PC Church’s death was accidental. But, the coroner asserted that this was the latest in a number of road accidents to take place at this junction, a matter for the police to consider carefully.
McGregor faces charges of driving without due care and attention.
