Exercise ban for fire-fighters to avoid risk of personal injury claims

Fire-fighters aim to keep their fitness levels up between shouts by training. However, a ban on running was enforced after a Merseyside fireman won a £100,000 personal injury compensation claim after slipping while running in an accident at work.

38 year old Gavin Bassie tore ligaments in his knee when he slipped on what fire service officials have deemed ‘invisible dust’. His knee injury resulted in the need for stitches to re-attach the ligaments to the outside of the leg and reconstructive knee surgery. This serious personal injury means that this fire-fighter’s career is now ruined and he has been unable to work since February 2001.

To prevent any further costly personal injury claims being made all forms of running as part of physical training have been prohibited temporarily for all fire service personnel by Chief Fire Officer, Tony McGuirk.

Les Skarrats, Merseyside branch secretary of the Fire Brigades’ Union says of this controversial issue: ‘They should be making sure the work places are safe, not banning running.’
