Paparazzi fined following Diana’s fatal road traffic accident
A French court has ordered three photographers to pay damages of 1 for taking pictures of Dodi Fayed and Diana, Princess of Wales, on the night of their fatal 1997 road traffic accident. The court ruled that Jacques Langevin, Fabrice Chassery and Christian Martinez, whose prosecution was brought by Mohamed Al Fayed, had no right to photograph the couple as their Mercedes sped away from Paris Ritz hotel, or even as they lay dying in the wreckage of the subsequent vehicle accident.
The fine of 1 (68p) is a symbolic amount, and is often used by French courts for offences that are deemed more technical than morally reprehensible. However, in addition to the miniscule fine, the photographers have been ordered to pay up to 6,000 to cover the cost of publishing the court ruling in three French newspapers.
Dodis father. Mohamed, was reported to be furious with the judges decision and once again blamed the road traffic accident on a conspiracy to kill his son and his rumoured-to-be-pregnant lover, Diana. Speaking after the court ruling, he said, This lovely couple were murdered with the paparazzi being used as a cover for the murder, and sooner or later I will succeed in exposing the full facts, and the people who committed this horrendous crime.
