Figures that have recently been released show that the NHS in the Norfolk region paid over £4m in compensation claims and legal fees in the 2004-2005 year.
The NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) is the body to which personal injury compensation claims are made, and it made payments on behalf of four hospitals and care trusts in the Norfolk area.
£1.7m was paid to both the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust and the James Paget Healthcare NHS Trust, with legal fees and costs totalling £900,000 between the two trusts.
The other trusts involved in the personal injury compensation payout were West Suffolk Hospital, which had £286,000 paid on its behalf, and Primary Care Trusts in Norfolk and North Suffolk, which were responsible for almost £300,000 in compensation.
A spokesman for Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust, Andrew Stronach, said that although there was not a clear rise in personal injury compensation claims, the hospital was considering removing adverts for personal injury firms from outpatient cards.
He also commented: “We are focused on reducing negligence claims or eliminating them and looking around the country at similar size trusts I think we are managing to do that.”
Mr Stronach went on to make reference to the Bristol NHS Trust, which paid out £8m in personal injury compensation in 2004-2005.
