Mother makes compensation claim against ‘racist’ school
A Muslim mother is making a compensation claim against a private school that she alleges is racist.
Pakistan-born Aliya Smethurst is suing St Christopher’s School in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, claiming that her six-year-old son, Mikhail, was subjected to racial abuse from both pupils and staff.
She told Swindon County Court how he was called ‘mud face’ and regularly punched, kicked and spat at by fellow pupils. She also insists he was assaulted by a teacher and the whole traumatic experience left him lacking in confidence.
The 37-year-old claims that she was also subjected to ill treatment on the grounds of her race, while she was employed at the school as a boarding-house matron.
In response to her allegations, Paul Gilroy, defending, cited psychiatric evidence which said she was “exceptionally paranoid” and stated, “Expert evidence shows there are clinical grounds that say [she] should not be relied upon.”
Mrs Smethurst is making the compensation claim against the school and its former headteacher for racial discrimination, negligence regarding bullying, personal injury and assault on Mikhail.
A judgement is expected on Friday 10 th February 2006.
