Asbestos exposure caused death from mesothelioma
Liverpool ’s Coroner’s Court ruled last week that a Merseyside man died as a result of asbestos exposure at his place of work. The man rented a building over a 20 year period between the 1940s and 1960s which he used as an abattoir for his pet food business. The Court heard from a witness who worked at the abattoir over the same period that asbestos lagging on pipe work in the building was in a state of deterioration and was infested by rats which disturbed, it causing visible dust particles in the air.
The coroner concluded that the man died from the industrial disease mesothelioma, which can have a 20 to 40 year incubation period and is incurable.
