MP pushes for personal injury compensation for miners

An MP is taking the case of thousands of ex-mineworkers who say they deserve personal injury compensation for contracting lung disorders to the House of Commons.

Kevan Jones, MP for Durham North, wants urgent action to help those that have been told they are not entitled to make a compensation claim because they were officially classed as surface workers, despite actually spending long spells underground.

Ex-mineworkers have already claimed more than 700m in recent years, after a scheme agreed between personal injury solicitors and Government authorities enabled thousands of cases to be processed.

But only those officially classed as miners have so far been able to make compensation claims, despite many ex-surface workers now suffering from lung cancer, pleural plaques and a range of other disorders.

The Department of Trade and Industry did agree in the past that surface workers' illnesses were caused by coal dust but they now say there is insufficient medical evidence to support this.

Kevan Jones plans to bring the Government's attention to the plight of the surface workers and said, "The Department for Trade and Industry needs to accept that surface workers were seriously affected by dust, just as underground workers were.

"I have met people who only ever worked on the surface, but are clearly suffering from COPD [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease] contracted as a result of that work. They deserve to be compensated."
