Lying motorists risk car accident claim rejection
Thousands of motorists are running the risk of their car accident claims being turned down following an accident because they gave false or incorrect information when purchasing their insurance policy.
A survey by Asda Motor Insurance has revealed that as many as 1 in 10 motorists could be guilty of lying in an effort to reduce the cost of their car insurance premium.
The most common untruth concerns where the car is kept overnight. 11% of motorists falsely claim it that their car is kept on a drive or even in a locked garage overnight, instead of admitting it is parked on the street.
The next most common deceit is from 6% of motorists who undervalue their car in a belief that a low value car will be cheaper to insurance. This isn’t necessarily the case.
The information you provide when you take out a car insurance policy forms the basis on which the policy is sold. The consequences of lying to get cheaper insurance means that if you need to make a car accident claim your insurance company may be unwilling to pay out.
If you have a car accident and subsequently make a claim on your policy, the details you gave when you bought your policy are checked and verified against the circumstances of the claim. Any discrepancy or change that you have not notified your insurance company of can often result in your insurance company refusing your claim.
It may seem tempting to try and cut a few pounds off your car insurance policy by giving incorrect information to your insurance company, after all no one thinks their going to be making a car accident claim do they? But if you do have an accident having lied to get insurance and your car insurance company won’t pay out, it may not have been such a good idea.
