Internet database launched to stop fraudulent compensation claims

At the end November 2005 an internet based data sharing system to help insurance companies identify compensation claim fraudsters went live.

The database contains over 125 million records including claimant records dating back ten years. The system was originally designed to investigate personal injury claims but is soon to be extended to other compensation claim areas such as vehicle accident claims and claims for accidents at work.

Claims handlers can obtain information about previous and ongoing compensation claims and authenticate claimants’ and witnesses’ identities via the database. This will compliment their current procedures and aims to alert the insurance industry of any foul play.

Steve Ward a DVS (Default Value Selector) consultant assured: ‘By sharing information in this way, a potentially fraudulent or a multiple application for a compensation claim can be identified crucially at a very early stage.’
