£100,000 mesothelioma claim underway
A Devon man has begun a mesothelioma compensation claim which could see him receive up to £100,000 in damages.
Ilmars Olins, 79, from Bideford, learnt that he had contracted the industrial illness in March 2005 and decided to make a compensation claim against his former employers.
He claims that his mesothelioma was caused by asbestos that he came into contact with as a result of his job grinding brake shoes for the BBA Group. His compensation claim is being made on the basis that the company were negligent and performed a breach of statutory duty in protecting his welfare.
Each year around 2,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with the disease, and life expectancy after diagnosis is usually reduced to fewer than 3 years.
The number of people who die from mesothelioma is expected to peak in 2015, around 30 years after blue and brown asbestos was banned in the UK. This is due to the fact the disease has a latency period of between 15 and 50 years, and even longer in some cases.
