Hopes for injury claims to be settled out of court
The Association of British Insurers is expected to be making a bid for the establishment of an independent arbitration system to take compensation claims out of the courts. The system would put an end to long Court battles and extremely high legal bills. It would be similar to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board set up in Ireland last year. The establishment of the board meant that claims costs were slashed by three quarters.
The system should dramatically speed up the length of time it takes for people suffering from a personal injury to be able to claim compensation. Some claims in Ireland are being settled three times more quickly than in the past. There has been no decrease in the amount that has been paid out to claimants.
In addition to the cost cutting benefits of setting up the new system it will also encourage genuine claimants to pursue personal injury compensation. In the past they were put off by the length of time it could take to make a claim. Many people who need medical care and rehabilitation will be able to get the help they need.
