A construction company, Barrington McDonnell Ltd, has been found guilty of breaching health and safety laws after an employee slipped off a ladder and broke his back. Robin Annetts was working alone up a 19 foot ladder at a construction site in Newbury last year (2005) when the incident occurred.
The company has been fined 2,500 and ordered to pay £1,888 costs at West Berkshire Magistrates Court. Robin Annetts is now confined to a wheelchair and is unable to work as a result of the accident which caused a serious back injury.
According to the Health and Safety Executive falls from heights over 10 foot are often fatal and companies should always undertake a risk assessment to evaluate the potential dangers of any working environment. There are 14 deaths each year attributable to falls from height. 1,200 back injuries and other accidents at work are caused in this way.
