Falls are main cause of accident at work fatalities

Falls from height are the biggest cause of death in Britain ’s workplaces and are The Health and Safety Executive’s top accident at work prevention priority. 53 people died in accidents resulting from falls in 2004/5 and employers are now facing compensation claims by the families of loved ones lost in these preventable accidents at work.

This includes a building firm in north Wales which has been fined £8,000, plus £5,290 costs following the death of an employee. The company admitted that their negligence had resulted in the man’s death when he fell 9ft from scaffolding that did not meet minimum safety standards.

Other accident a work judgements
Operators of the Mall Pallasades in Birmingham and a security firm have been fined at total of £21,500 following an accident at work where a security guard suffered a serious personal injury in a fall of 15ft through a skylight onto a concrete floor. Both companies admitted that breaches in safety regulations for which they were responsible, were the cause of the accident.

A cleaning company from Cheshire has admitted safety offences that led to an employee suffering extensive personal injuries in an accident at work when he fell from the fifth floor of a building. The man received £15,000 in compensation and the company was ordered to pay costs of £6,985.
