Ex-football star wins record sum after head injury

Ex-footballer Dean Richards has been awarded a record 2 million insurance payout after a head injury forced him to retire from playing.

The former Tottenham and Wolves defender was 31 when doctors warned in March 2005 that if he continued to play it was likely that he could suffer a brain haemorrhage.

Richards had struggled to find his form over the previous months as dizzy spells and headaches got the better of him. Diagnoses varied between ear infections and brain tumours, and the latter has not been completely ruled out.

Married with three children, the defender made the head injury compensation claim after taking out cover with a leading insurance broker and risk management consultant. Although seemingly an enormous amount of money, the £2 million is only half of what Richards could have earned if he was able to continue with his 40,000 a week contract for the rest of his playing career.

Once tipped for England honours, Dean Richards released a statement saying, “Football has been my life for as long as I can remember, and the pleasure and fulfilment that being a professional footballer gave me has left a huge gap in my life that cannot be replaced- no amount of money can compensate for this loss.”

With his head injury meaning that Richards has to now look to other areas for work, he has indicated that he would like to be involved in coaching or maybe pursue a career in punditry.

The ex-player's agent, Ben Lambourne, said, "It just shows that you can never take anything for granted."
