Child watches father die in tragic vehicle accident

A five-year-old girl has survived a horrific vehicle accident which killed her father on a Scottish road.

The little girl was trapped in the wreckage with the seatbelt around her neck while her dad lay dying only feet away. Firefighters managed to rescue the child before she was throttled by the seatbelt, and she was taken to Edinburgh's Sick Children’s Hospital with minor brusing.

The driver of the car, 30-year-old Peter Seath from Gorebridge, suffered severe head injuries in the car accident but rescuers were unable to save him, as fire brigade spokesman Gavin Dunlop explained, "Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear to remove her father and he was still alive at that point, but almost as soon as they removed him to get him to the paramedics he died."

It is thought that Mr Seath, an engineer, lost control of his Vauxhall Vectra SRi as it went round a bend on Newbattle Road near Dalkeith, mounting the embankment and being thrown on to its roof. Witnesses say the little girl would almost certainly have died if she wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Attending the scene of the vehicle accident was said to be extremely upsetting for the firefighters involved, and fire chiefs have revealed that they will be offering counselling to their traumatised personnel.

Any witnesses to the car crash have been asked to contact officers at Dalkeith police station.
