CSC looking to become regulatory board for personal injury compensation industry
The Government this week confirmed that the Claims Standards Council (CSC) is the most likely body to become the regulator of claims management companies in the UK.
The Department of Constitutional Affairs (DCA) have stated that they would prefer an established company become the regulator of compensation claim firms, and have confirmed they have commissioned a report into the Claims Standard Council to assess its capability for fulfilling the position.
A spokesman for the DCA said: “The research looks to see if any changes are required to the CSC before it can be considered a possible regulator.”
Baroness Ashton, the Parliamentary under secretary of state, and the DCA will announce their findings to the House of Lords on the 16 th January 2006 .
The CSC welcomed the developments, saying: “We were really pleased with what was said to us, but we are not aware of what the final report has concluded.”
The Law Society is the only other established contender for the role to be suggested, but some feel that it would be too biased towards the wishes of personal injury solicitors. However, the CSC has its critics too; Dominic Clayden of Norwich Union comments: “The CSC is a voluntary trade organisation representing only a relatively small number of claims management companies.”
Whichever company is chosen as regulator will have a dual function; firstly to provide ground rules for the practices of compensation claim firms, and secondly to tackle the “compensation claim culture”.
