Amicus receives record number of calls after stepping up its campaign to compensate asbestos victims
Amicus, the largest private sector union in the UK is receiving a large number of calls in response to the stepping up of a campaign to compensate people suffering from asbestosis and other asbestos related illnesses. A major event was held in the East Midlands in December 2005 to increase awareness of asbestos exposure and to increase the amount of compensation that is awarded to people suffering from incurable diseases brought on by contact with the deadly fibres.
A database has been created that documents all cases of asbestos exposure. The database will ensure that all union members suffering from asbestos related diseases will have a better chance of winning their asbestosis compensation claim.
The union has stepped up its campaign to highlight the fact that this is not yesterday’s problem. Because of the delayed onset of asbestos related illnesses such as asbestosis and mesothelioma we are seeing an increase in the instance of these diseases in people who were exposed some 25 years ago or more.
Mesothelioma deaths have increased from 153 in 1968 to 1874 in 2003. It is also estimated that by 2011 there will be 10,000 deaths from asbestos related illnesses.
Insurers have mounted a large number of challenges to avoid paying damages to people who are suffering at the hands of asbestos. Unions are trying to ensure that many more sufferers and their relatives will be compensated properly in the future.
