Youngest case of asbestosis death ruled accidental

32 year old Barry Welch died in April 2004 following an 11 month battle against mesothelioma, the cancer commonly associated with asbestos.

The inquest showed that it was likely that Mr Welch contracted mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos dust as a child. Mr Welch’s stepfather worked as a scaffolder at a Kent power station and carried the lethal fibres into the household on his clothes.

There have been many cases of women contracting mesothelioma while washing their husband’s contaminated work clothes. However, Mr Welch’s asbestosis case is believed to be the first of its sort to be reported in the UK.

Dr Clive Muatero, consultant oncologist at Leicester Royal Infirmary, stated that the father of three was considered for new radical surgery although his condition was too advanced. Sadly, Mr Welch’s exposure to asbestos fibres resulted in the youngest ever reported asbestosis death.

Although Mr Welch’s death was ruled as accidental in December 2005 the family plan to take legal action and look to make a personal injury compensation claim to help them to continue with their lives after this devastation.
