A personal injury case between employee Jeff Smalley, represented by union Amicus, and his former employers James Maude & Co has been found in favour of the claimant, who was awarded £1.45m in accident compensation.
Jeff Smalley was involved in a falling accident at the firm in 1980, which caused an arm injury and lead to the amputation of his right arm five years later. He then suffered a serious shoulder injury in 2001 when a sandblasting machine exploded, and complications meant that his left arm also needed to be amputated.
James Maude & Co has ceased trading since the 2001 accident, and was represented in the personal injury case by agents, who agreed an out of court settlement with Amicus and Mr Smalley.
Georgina Hirsch, of Amicus, commented: "This is an absolutely tragic case and no amount of money will ever make up for Mr Smalley's loss."
In another recent personal injury case, Amicus helped a Nissan Employee named Mike Gregg to make a successful neck injury claim. He was awarded £85,000 in accident compensation.
