In 2010 the UK government released statistics which indicated a promising outlook for motorbike safety and the motorcycle accident claim rate.
According to figures, although the number of miles travelled by powered two-wheelers has increased, the rate of crashes has actually decreased. This flies in the face of the popular conception that more miles equals more road accidents.
For example, in 2009 motorbike traffic rose by 2 percent but the rate of motorbike crash injuries fell by 4 percent. Furthermore, this trend was also reflected in the rate of serious personal injuries, which also fell by 4 percent.
The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) indicated that it welcomed news of the statistics but warned both riders and road safety policymakers against complacency. "Although there is still a strong concern about the number of motorcycle casualties, the fact remains that year after year motorcycling continues to get safer in terms of the likelihood of having an accident," said MCI's CEO Steve Kenward.
He added, "The reported fall in motorcycle fatalities during 2009 is welcome, but we can not be complacent about this there are simply far too many people dying in accidents - and we still have much more work to do.
"The MCI and the rest of the motorcycle community will continue to work hard to improve safety and ensure that we get full Government support for a more rounded approach to road-user safety.
"The full integration of motorcycles into mainstream transport policy and local transport plans, which the Government is now backing, can only help maintain and improve on this reduction in casualties and needs to be a key priority along with improvements to rider training delivery and participation."
The motorcycle accident claim spokesperson from no win, no fee injury compensation specialist YouClaim echoed this view but added, "It is dangerous for the motoring public to imagine that some motorbike accidents are inevitable.
"The truth remains that, despite variable risk factors, all motorcycle road safety incidents are avoidable for one reason or another, whether it is road design, rider behaviour or the behaviour of other road users.
"In our experience in helping claimants secure compensation for motorbike accidents, it is clear that the vast majority of incidents are caused by simple, avoidable behaviours. Until all these have been eliminated, none of us can afford to rest on our laurels."
