Scooter accidents and the dangers of school rush hour

Traffic around schools can get busy, especially around school opening and closing times. This busy 'rush hour' can become especially dangerous around those schools with six form colleges as inexperienced drivers try to navigate themselves through the traffic. Scooter accidents can be common as 16 year-olds, desperate for some independence, take advantage of the younger driving age.

In March 2010, a schoolgirl in Sunderland was victim to a scooter accident as she made her way home from school. The 13-year-old was knocked unconscious by a scooter not far from Seaham School of Technology.

The girl suffered a bump to her head, cuts, grazes and damage to her foot and required a week off school to recover. The accident followed traffic troubles outside the school which was plagued with rogue bikers and parents parking indiscriminately creating havoc for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Police Community Support Officers worked alongside the school to help minimise the danger of the school traffic by patrolling around the area and adding extra guardrails and signs to encourage motorists to be extra cautious.

Local police officer PC Janet Hutchinson said of the problem: "This issue was highlighted through our Police and Communities Together meetings and through the school's headmaster."

Speaking at the time of the scooter accident, the school's headmaster David shield said, "The issue concerns me hugely and it's putting the pupils' welfare at risk."

However, the extra safety measures seemed to have helped ease the situation as one mum whose children attended the school commented, "It was bedlam outside the school, not just because of scooters but cars. Since [the accident] it seems to have been better."

The roads around school entrances are notorious for causing traffic problems and are potentially very dangerous places as pupils leaving or going to the school may not be paying full attention to the traffic around them.

Traffic calming measures and extra safety strategies to help protect pedestrians are therefore very important for preventing accidents around school gates.
