Study makes advanced rider claim for motorbike crash rate

Many riders have long argued that if a person wants to avoid a claim for motorbike crash, he or she should seek to undertake advanced rider training. However, despite what many would assume to be an obvious connection between advanced training and safer riding, few studies exist to support this link.

However, in 2010 this changed when the Institute for Advanced Motorists published a study by the University of Nottingham's Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics & Rider Human Factors, which, by using a highly-sophisticated and ultra-realistic simulator sought to solve the question of whether riders with advanced training ride any differently to both novice riders and those who are experienced but don't possess advanced training.

By giving these different sets of riders identical road safety scenarios on the Triumph Daytona 675-enabled simulator, the researchers were able to identify differences in their riding behavior. Perhaps surprisingly, the study showed that experienced riders had more in common with novice riders than with advanced riders – in short, advanced riders were superior at both anticipating and responding to hazards.

One of the researches from the Human Factors Research Group said that the study had "demonstrated clear differences between the rider groups and potential benefits to advanced training above and beyond rider experience and basic training. Whilst experience seems to help develop rider skills to an extent, advanced training appears to develop deeper levels of awareness, perception and responsibility. It also appears to make riders better urban riders and quicker, smoother and safer riders in rural settings."

Another echoed this view, saying that it had been "shown that advanced riders were quicker to identify hazards and had a greater awareness on their responsibility to themselves and other road users."

A spokesperson from the no win, no fee team at claim for motorbike crash specialists YouClaim commented, "What this study tells us is very interesting and although two-thirds of motorcycle accidents are actually caused by car drivers, it is possible that if more riders undertake advanced training, there may be a reduction in incidents caused by riders – potentially saving hundreds, even thousands, of lives."
