If one single document can be considered to have played the chief role in improving motorcycling safety and ameliorating the motorbike crash rate over the past decades, it must be the Hurt Report (Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures, Volume 1: Technical Report)
Described by one expert as "the most comprehensive motorcycle safety study of the 20th century," the Hurt Report helped define the motorcycling road safety policy of many of the world's developed nations.
The report made 55 key findings which helped road safety policymakers understand the many risk factors inherent in the motorcycling experience.
Although the report was clear and unbiased in its findings and did not shy away from placing the blame for many accidents on the actions of riders, it also helped destigmatise the motorcycling community by comprehensively demonstrating that the drivers of other vehicles were often to blame for motorbike-related incidents.
Chief among its many findings was its description of the way many a motorbike crash is caused by the driver of a larger vehicle failing to even notice the presence of a motorcycle on the road.
It also helped provide proof of the need for riders to wear conspicuous clothing to alert other road users to their presence.
As Professor Hunt has commented in the years since the publication of the report, "The more time goes by, the less things look different. Riders today have the same sort of accidents as riders in the 1970s, except that today they crash much more expensive bikes."
