At first it may seem like a novel idea - using motorbikes to combat motorbike accidents - but when looked at more closely, Sussex police's decision to patrol the roads with unmarked motorbikes makes perfect sense.
The need for enhanced road safety is pressing: Sussex Safer Roads Partnership reports that 2,176 riders were involved in accidents between 2006 and 2009, of these, 733 have suffered serious personal injury and 64 have been killed.
The unmarked police vehicles should not come as a surprise to attentive riders though; road signs will alert road users to their the presence of the patrols
An inspector with Sussex's road policing unit comments, "These signs will be a continual reminder to all road users of our continued targeted enforcement action, in a significant effort to try reduce the motorcyclist casualties across Sussex.
"We would also encourage members of the public to report any road user who rides or drives inappropriately so we can target those individuals who present the greatest risk.
"We have got the resources to target those who go out to intentionally break the law, to get a cheap thrill and we will deal with those who commit this serious crime in the robust manner that it deserves."
A spokesperson from East Sussex County Council says that such measures are clearly needed when it is considered that motorbike accidents account for a disproportionate number of road deaths. "Here in East Sussex last year, motorcyclists made up a quarter of the total number of people who were killed or seriously injured on our roads," he said.
"Considering this particular group only make up about 1% of all road users, it does highlight how vulnerable you are when riding a motorcycle."
