According to figures from one law firm, the introduction of a new motorcycle test in April 2009 can be correlated to an increase in motorbike accidents and enquiries about related compensation claims.
The 2009 developments in the test were introduced by the UK's Driving Standards Agency in line with an EU directive designed to reduce the number of motorcycle injury cases on the roads of Europe, so it is a cruel irony that one of the manoeuvres introduced by the test has been accused of being a danger to riders itself.
This is the hazard avoidance manoeuvre, in which a rider is required to ride at 31.1 miles per hour before swerving, then coming to a complete stop. Particularly in wet conditions, there is a risk of a wheel locking, causing the rider to lose control, if the brake is applied while swerving.
One client who approached the firm suffered personal injury including smashed ribs, a fractured shoulder blade, and damage to the lungs which hospitalised the rider for a prolonged period.
A spokesperson for the firm said, "Since the introduction of the new test and procedures we have certainly noticed a significant increase in the number of enquiries coming through to us from riders sustaining injuries whilst completing the test.
"We have spoken to very experienced riders who have expressed their concern over the new test and even stated they would not want to do it due to the safety concerns even with their years of experience".
