Weather may be to blame for rise in Sussex motorcycle accidents

Concern has been expressed by police, riding groups and road safety experts after it emerged that there has been a rise in the number of motorcycle accidents occurring in Sussex.

The figures detailing the period between February 2008/2009 reveal that the number of recorded incidents rose 50% on the same period the previous year.

An increase in weather-related motorcycle accidents is believed to be the foremost reason for this dramatic rise, with skidding and sliding accidents accounting for a disproportionate number of rider personal injuries on Sussex roads.

Sgt Richard Hornsey, from the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, comments, "In all bar one of these collisions the motorcycle lost traction on the road surface, indicating that the weather conditions and inexperience of some riders when travelling in certain weather conditions had a significant effect in the number of motorcycle accidents. "Comparing the type of injuries sustained by the riders, it is leg and arm injuries that have shown the greatest increase, as one might expect if a bike slips and the rider automatically puts out an arm or leg to save themselves."

He also reminded riders to both pad up appropriately and ride with caution, "This shows the importance of wearing the correct protective clothing, a good quality helmet, jacket, trousers, boots and gloves."

"Those who choose to travel on two wheels – either by desire or necessity – need to take all reasonable precautions to protect themselves from serious injury should they be unfortunate enough to be involved in a collision. Additionally, with many motorbike crashes still be caused by the actions of other road users, Sgt Hornsey advised the drivers of other vehicles to always be on the look out for riders. "It is also worth highlighting to drivers of cars and goods vehicles that there are likely to be more motorcycles and bicycles on the roads at all hours and they should give them the appropriate amount of room when overtaking and pay particular attention when pulling out of or turning into junctions," he said.
