Potholes pose a greater hazard to motorcyclists than to any other road-using group. In fact, chances are that even those riders who do not suffer personal injury in motorcycle accidents caused by potholes will have plenty of experience of pothole-related near misses.
A report by Kwik-Fit claims that in just two months during 2009 10 million road users, many of them riders, had to make an emergency manoeuvre in order to avoid an accident.
TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson has expressed particular concern at the motorcycle accident risk posed by potholes. "The contact patch between a motorcycle tyre and the road is smaller than a car tyre's contact patch, meaning that optimal grip is critical," he said.
Adding, "Bikers rely more on the condition of the roads than car drivers, as any uneven surfaces can be felt directly by the rider when steering and cornering. A deflection caused by a pothole could easily result in the biker losing control of the bike and falling onto the road.
"Any motorcyclists who are concerned about potential damage to their tyres caused by potholes or poor road surfaces should visit their local tyre dealer for professional advice."
Pothole damage to the UK's roads was especially acute in 2009, with the rate of potholes up 32% on the previous year. Much of this rise has been attributed to the "freeze and thaw" effect: a phenomenon characterised by drops in temperature causing water within the road surface to expand and eventually break up bitumen.
Inevitably, this has resulted in an increase in the number of motorcycle accident claims, with AA Insurance recording a 300% increase in road damage-related claims in February of that year.
