Motorcycle accidents and roadside tributes

It is an all too familiar sight - a motorcycle accident tribute at the side of an A-road, perhaps with a wreath, flowers and a photograph of the deceased.

While it is easy to understand why loved ones create these roadside memorials, whether it is simply to mourn the passing of a loved one, celebrate a life or to serve as a warning to other road users, their effect on passing traffic has been called into question.

Recently, it has become common practice for Derbyshire Council to remove these memorials after a time limit.

However, road safety organisations such as Brake have questioned whether there is any purpose in doing this. A spokesperson comments, "It's no bad thing that people are being reminded that others have been killed on the roads they are driving on.

"Some people don't like to be reminded that people die on the roads, but unfortunately that's the case, this is reality.

"I haven't seen any research out there saying roadside memorials are a danger.

"We should be doing whatever we can to support the families."

And it seems that the council may have a fight on its hands if its to enforce the time limit; there is no evidence that roadside memorials present either a car or motorcycle accident hazard, and many memorialists have said that if councils remove memorials they will simply put them back up again.

A spokesperson from RoadPeace comments, "I understand why councils are saying there are safety issues but there isn't any evidence for it.

"There are things you can do by way of a living tribute and we would ask local authorities to work with the families."
