Airbag jackets in motorcycle accidents

At YouClaim we constantly attempt to keep abreast of innovations in safety technology to prevent motorcycle accidents and new items of protective equipment, such as the 'airbag jacket' that offers inflatable protection for riders who are thrown from their bike in a collision or skidding accident.

In February 2009 calls were made to make the wearing of such protective devices to be made compulsory.

Motorcycle accident deaths in the UK
According to BBC Newsbeat whilst motorcyclists make up only one per cent of road users, they account for 20 per cent of fatalities on UK roads. In 2007, 561 bikers died after being involved in motorcycle accidents.

As part of the Newsbeat report a stuntman, wearing an airbag jacket, simulated a skidding accident where the rider hits a substance on the road that causes him to lose traction. He came off his bike at around 30mph and rolled two to three times on the road surface.

On the video that accompanied the report it was plain to see how the inflation of the air chambers inside his jacket cushioned the impact of the fall.

Getting straight up after the motorcycle accident he said, "It's tight. It's protecting all around my ribs.

"It stops the bounce. I think it's the bounce when you're crashing at speed that hurts you."

An Accident and Emergency doctor at St Thomas' Hospital, London said that the number of motorcyclists' deaths was shocking. He suggested that the inflatable jackets afforded protection to a rider's vital organs, neck and spine over and above that which a normal jacket would do.

He told Newsbeat, "I think dozens of lives could be saved if these jackets were made compulsory."

The Department of Transport told Newsbeat that although it had no plans for new laws regarding airbag jackets at that time, it welcomed any technology that could improve motorcycle safety.
