Research has consistently shown that motorists who count motorbike riders among their friends or family are more likely to pay attention to the safety of motorcyclists than those without such a personal connection. With this in mind campaigners decided to harness this information in order to try and reduce the unacceptable motorcycle accident death toll.
Christened "Named Riders", the campaign featured television adverts and online delivery of its message in the hope of getting more motorists to notice motorcyclists.
As part of the campaign, television adverts showed bikers riding through UK streets with large neon signs attached to their motorcycles. The signs carried the rider's name together with information about the rider's personality such as "shy retiring type" or "new dad". One features a male rider with a female pillion passenger and the information "met on the internet".
Road safety minister Paul Clarke commented on the adverts, "We are working hard to tackle the unacceptable number of collisions where motorcyclists are killed on Britain's roads and our THINK! campaigns are a vital part of this.
"Previous adverts have warned drivers to look out for bikes in specific situations such as at T-junctions or in their blind spots and showed the deadly consequences of failing to do so. This exciting new campaign goes a step further by asking drivers to reconsider the way they look at bikers."
A spokesperson from no win, no fee compensation firm YouClaim said that the adverts "are a clever concept and may play a part, however small, in assisting other motorists in realizing that there is always a face behind the helmet. However, it is only in the long-term that we will know just how effective they have been in raising awareness."
