Bikers stopped to prevent motorcycle accidents

In a bid to stop motorcycle accidents, one Essex village has combined with local police to address biker's motoring offences in an annual event on the Dengie Peninsula.

Residents of Althorne, near Chelmsford, experienced many years of dangerous biker behaviour and believed their opinions were not being listened to by police, so, in 2006, an initiative began for a one-day crackdown on motorcyclists visiting the area.

Now an annual occurrence, the day aims to encourage communication about biking issues between riders and police.

On the chosen day, local police attempt to stop every motorcyclist who enters the village to discuss how they can be safer on the road. In 2009 covert motorbikes used by traffic officers were present in the village for the first time.

By using the on-board video cameras officers are able to catch bikers who break the law and subsequently use the footage as evidence.

Adam Pipe, casualty reduction and operational performance manager for Essex Police, said, "We try to engage with the motorcycle community and tackle a variety of offences including excess speed and give them feedback on their riding behaviour.

"We can run number plates through and stop people who may be involved or wanted for other crimes."

"It's not because we're picking on [motorcyclists], but it sends out a positive message that we're listening to residents' concerns.

Every rider who stops at the event will be offered a cup of tea and a burger and will be encouraged to sign up to Bike Safe, a scheme that combines education and enforcement messages in a bid to reduce the number of bikers killed and seriously injured in motorcycle accidents across the county of Essex.
