Have your CRASH Card handy in the event of a motorcycle accident

Look in any local newspaper and you will oftentimes find reports of bikers injured in a motorcycle accident. It happens with unerring frequency and though motorbike accident prevention should of course be high on the list of priorities for road safety agencies, the best possible personal injury treatment in the event of an emergency is also of great importance.

In 2010 news came to light of a potentially life saving initiative aimed at bikers across the country launched by the Essex Ambulance Motorcycle Club, in association with local ambulance services, called CRASH Card.

The CRASH Card is about the size of a credit card which motorcyclists can fit inside their crash helmet so that it is with them whenever they ride. The motorcyclist should fill in the card with important medical history details, such as allergies to certain medicines or underlying conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.

There is also space for details of next-of-kin and emergency contact telephone numbers.

These details can be a boon to medics who treat the victims of motorcycle accidents.

Paramedic and co-developer of the CRASH Card Chris Attfield said, "It is a sad fact that when a motorcyclist is involved in a collision it can be very serious and leave them unconscious

"The cards will not only help identify them but also ensure we can tailor the treatment we provide at the roadside."

The CRASH Card comes with a small green sticker which can be safely attached to the motorcyclist’s crash helmet to alert the emergency services to the presence of the potentially life saving details.

Felicity Drewett, of the Highways Agency in the South East which promotes the CRASH card, said that although motorcyclists represent less than 1 percent of road users in the UK yet they amount to 19 percent of the total casualties who are seriously injured in road accidents.

Mr Attfield added, "This card could really make the difference between life and death."
