It has long been known that so-called "born again" riders are involved in a disproportionately high number of road safety incidents and, consequently, a disproportionately high number of motorcycle accident claims, yet it had been hoped that since this became apparent in the 1990s the situation would have improved. However, all indications are that it has not.
In fact, the situation in Scotland is a case in point. It would indicate that, if anything, the problem of born again riders is growing. For example, in Scotland in 1997 380 riders between the ages of 30 and 47 suffered personal injury in motorbike accidents; by 2007 this number had risen to 506.
These figures are in keeping with some rather alarming motorcycle-specific trends. Although overall road safety seems to be improving in Scotland, with fatal crashes and personal injuries down, the number of serious and fatal motorcycling injuries is up 10% on 1997 levels.
Inevitably, such trends have an economic cost, not only to hospitals and road safety groups, but also to insurance customers who have to carry the cost of motorcycle accident claims.
Brian Anderson, chief superintendent, Dumfries and Galloway constabulary, and spokesman on road policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, comments on the born again rider problem, "Motorcycle casualties are a significant concern. Police forces closely analyse road crash statistics and we know that the majority of people involved in motorcycle accidents are in their 30s and 40s.
"We don't want to be killjoys but the message is about safety. Of course, middle-aged men should go out on a motorcycle if they wish, but if they were last on one in their late teens, they need to be aware that modern bikes are different, they are more powerful and there are more vehicles on the roads. It is a fact that motorcyclists are more likely to be killed or seriously injured than a car driver."
