Motorcyclists who are safe and considerate riders on the highway could still cause a road traffic accident, resulting in a motorcycle accident claim being made, if they fail to conduct regular vehicle checks.
There is one quick and easy check which motorcyclists should perform before every journey, which will reduce the likelihood of suffering a crash due to mechanical failure, and that is observing the bike's oil level.
Some motorbikes have an inspection window and others have a dipstick, but whichever the bike's design the rider should take a moment to see if the oil level has dropped below the minimum marking.
Before taking note of the oil level, the biker should safely prop the motorcycle in an upright position on level ground. This will let the oil stabilise in its canister and allow for an accurate reading.
If the level is close to the minimum mark or below, then the biker should remove the filler cap and fill the bike back up to a safe level. The oil should not exceed the maximum level marker and only the specified oil type for the motorcycle should be used.
Failing to check a bike's oil levels could result in overheating and key components of the vehicle becoming damaged and eventually ceasing to work. If this occurs on the road it could cause a crash when the bike stops functioning suddenly.
Another reason for riders to check their oil level is that it is usually a good indication of whether the bike is in a good condition or not.
Regular checks will allow the biker to monitor the level following each of their journeys, and this might warn them of other hidden problems since a bike in good condition should use very little oil from one oil change to another.
If the oil level is falling significantly, there may be cause to have the motorcycle looked at by a reputable garage in case there are hidden faults on the vehicle which the rider is unaware of.
