Motorcycle accident claims and skin graft operations

Many motorcyclists buy helmets to avoid head injury, but they may forget that their legs and arms are also at risk of being severely and painfully damaged if they are involved in a road traffic incident and are not wearing full riding leathers.

If they are unfortunate enough to have an accident through the fault of another motorist, not only might they want to make a motorcycle accident claim but they may have suffered a painful degloving injury and face having a skin graft in hospital.

Degloving injury
This very painful injury is caused when skin, and sometimes even muscle structure of a limb, is torn from its connecting bone and blood supply. The word degloving is used in reference to skin or muscle tissue being removed from the bone completely in a similar fashion to a glove being removed from a hand.

Skin grafts
When having suffered a degloving injury, the victim will often go through a skin grafting procedure to replace the dead tissue.

Occasionally, skin from a human donor or a pig is used. This happens in situations when the patient is not healthy enough to go through a further operation to remove skin from another area of their own body immediately. These types of grafts are only temporary since the victim's immune system will reject foreign tissue within a week.

Eventually, if not straight away, the patient's own healthy skin is used on the damaged area. A skin graft is necessary to stop bacteria from entering the wound, and to begin the body's healing process.

Even after the skin graft is complete, the new skin and tissue must be carefully looked after. Healing skin must be wrapped in gauze for support and the patient must rest whichever limb is affected.

Once the graft has healed, the victim will have to moisturise that patch of skin regularly for the rest of their lives because grafted skin has no sweat or oil glands to keep it from drying.

Avoiding a degloving injury
The best way to protect from a possible degloving injury caused by a motorcycle accident is to wear full riding leathers.

Riding leathers will help protect the motorist's arms and legs from more severe harm.
