Motorcycle accidents and the accidents and the dangers of road junctions

A large number of motorcycle accidents are simply caused by motorists failing to spot them before it's too late. Motorists pulling out of junctions can be particularly hazardous to motorcyclists as many drivers will fail to properly check that both lanes are clear before pulling out to turn right.

It is a well known fact that as we age, our perception skills begin to weaken as our reactions slow. This can make it hard for elderly drivers to judge when it is safe to pull out from road junctions. In 2009, one elderly driver's failure to judge the speed of an oncoming motorbike sadly ended in tragedy.

The 76-year-old driver had a momentary "lapse of concentration" when his car hit and killed a motorcyclist as he pulled out of a junction. The retired local government officer hit the Kawasaki motorbike when turning right out of Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft on April 21st.

Pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving, the driver was sentenced to a 12 month community order to carry out 180 hours unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for one year and ordered to pay £85 in costs. He was also told he must retake an extended driving test after the disqualification ends.

The prosecutor said of the driver's actions during the crash: "The error was that he looked to his left and misjudged the speed of the motorcycle, or didn't look well enough. It was a momentary lapse of concentration on his part."

The biker killed in the motorcycle accident was a motorbike enthusiast and around 60 bikers formed a tribute cavalcade to accompany his funeral cortege and his hearse was pulled by a Harley Davidson.

While it was not immediately reported whether his relatives would be likely to make a compensation claim for the biker's death, following the driver's conviction it is likely that a motorbike crash claim would be successful.
