Some motorbike owners may forget that maintaining their motorcycle tyres is just as important as looking after the mechanical components of the bike. Failure to maintain the wheels could result in motorbike injury.
Many factors can affect the grip a motorcycle has on the road, but the main one that a rider themselves has influence over is the wheels of the vehicle.
Having worn tyre treads often means that, as well as being ridden illegally, a bike will lose grip on the road during certain manoeuvres such as on sharp corners. This could have fatal consequences not only for the rider of the bike, but for any motorists on the road at the time of the accident.
Road surface is also a factor which should be taken into account by riders. Well maintained tyres will grip better, but even these can skid on poor road surfaces, loose chippings from road-works, or even newly laid road surfaces which are often very smooth.
As well as the danger posed by different road surfaces, bikers should take the weather into account. Wet or icy road surfaces, coupled with tyres which have little or no tread left on them, may cause the bike to hydroplane along the road surface.
Some riders may be able to manoeuvre themselves out of the potential accident but others will not be able to, resulting in a skid and subsequent accident.
Motorcyclists have a greater chance of regaining control of their vehicle if they suffer a back-wheel skid because their steering controls the front of the bike. However, if their front wheel loses grip, they are much less likely to be able to stop the bike from falling because they must fight for command of the vehicle against the power of the wheel's forward motion as it comes out of alignment with the bike.
Due to the speeds that motorcycles can reach, often a rider who loses control of their bike will not be able to rectify the situation and will fall. This poses danger to vehicle drivers on both sides of the road, since the rider and their bike could end up on either side of a carriageway and may travel some distance before coming to a halt.
If another road user is harmed during a motorcycle accident, due to the negligence of the rider towards tyre maintenance, a victim may be able to claim compensation from the biker for pain, suffering and possible loss of earnings.
All road users have a responsibility to keep other road users safe, as well as themselves, by driving well and maintaining their vehicles correctly. If any driver does not do this and injures someone in a resultant incident, they are likely to be found liable if the other road user is not at fault.
