Motorcyclists should regularly check their motorbikes and perform the necessary maintenance so that the machine is kept in good working order. However, some riders may not be aware that they should keep an eye on their motorbike battery.
Most motorcycle batteries need very little maintenance if they have been correctly charged and installed. Usually they only need to be thoroughly serviced every three years.
Yet, due to their size they are prone to being temperamental and typically do not last well if they are abused by the bike owner.
Poorly looked after batteries can fail within a month of having been purchased and installed, and this could cause a road traffic accident if it occurs while the rider is out on the road.
Battery maintenance
Checking the battery once a month should reduce the risk of it becoming faulty through poor maintenance and wear.
Different types of battery will require different types of maintenance. For example, the checking of electrolyte levels should only be performed on conventional and lead acid batteries.
However, all batteries will benefit from the rider keeping the top of the battery free from dirt, checking the cables and clamps for loose connections, and cleaning the terminals of sulphate build-up.
Conventional or lead acid batteries should have their interiors checked for sediment and sulphate build-up, have the exhaust tube checked for any kinks and clogs, and have their caps replaced firmly once maintenance is complete.
Upon completing the maintenance, the rider should check the battery with a hydrometer or voltmeter. This will show them how well the battery is charged.
All of these checks should reduce the risk of the rider being involved in a crash and causing themselves, and others, personal injury.
Motorbike injury caused by poor battery maintenance
If you have sustained personal injury in a non-fault motorcycle accident due to the rider's failure to check the battery for faults and maintaining it, we could help you make a compensation claim for your pain, suffering and loss of earnings.
Whether you were a pillion passenger or another road user, YouClaim's expert solicitors could win you the settlement you deserve.
