When researching motorbike crash statistics MAIDS (Motorcycle Accidents In Depth Study) is currently the most comprehensive data available for Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs) accidents in Europe.
The study was carried out over three years using information from 921 accidents which occurred in five countries and by the application of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) common research methodology.
In order to select the accidents which would be studied five European countries were chosen and a further five areas of each country were then identified as representative of PTW accident patterns.
The study took the form of a questionnaire each with 2000 variables and the answers generated formed the basis for MAIDS report.
Data was collected from September 1999.
In April 2009 The MAIDS Report Version 2.0 was released containing a new presentation of the data for mopeds (L1s) and motorcycles (L3s) within the chapters General Accident Characteristics and Rational for Action.
New multivariate analysis was also made available on fatal motorbike crashes with statistics given for all PTWs as well as L1s and L3s wherever appropriate.
Version 2.0 also contained latest updates on motorcycle accidents and accident statistics. It can be downloaded by going to the MAIDS website and registering.
