FEMA and road barriers for the prevention of motorbike crash injuries

FEMA, the Federation of European Motorcyclist's Associations, is the representative body for all users of motorcycles (all powered two-wheeled vehicles) and its primary objective is to pursue, promote and protect the interests of motorcyclists. One of FEMA's main areas of campaigning is concerned with rider safety and the prevention of serious injury in the event of a motorbike crash.

In late 2009 FEMA announced that after many years of campaigning to improve the standardised build of crash barriers to protect motorcyclists as well as car users, a Europe-wide standard would hopefully be established by Summer 2010.

Up until the time when a new standard roadside barrier is introduced, European standards have failed to include barrier impact tests for motorcycles and experts at the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) hoped to begin including such tests by June 2010.

FEMA has campaigned for many years for a standard which required barriers to protect motorbike riders. Their suggestions for improvement included the addition of an additional low guard rail which would prevent riders from sliding under barriers and colliding with supporting posts.

Barrier supports have no energy absorption properties and it is collisions with these posts that have been a major cause of motorcyclists' fatal injuries. They also cause serious organ and limb damage which can lead to limb amputation.

FEMA spokesman Hugo Roebroeck said the "first step towards the adoption of a standard for guard rails that protect motorcyclists" had been taken in a meeting with technical experts from European member states at CEN's headquarters in Brussels on 27th November 2009.

He added that the standard needed to go through a further approval stage "which in turn will allow its adoption" by a CEN technical committee "during its annual meeting at end of June [2010] in Prague".

It was hoped that the improved standardisation of road safety barriers would greatly improve the survival rate for riders after a motorbike crash and could prevent many of the disabling injuries that occur.
