Riding tests are meant to prevent motorbike accidents, not cause them. Yet in 2009 it became clear that the new and supposedly improved test may be placing learner riders at unnecessary risk of personal injury.
In response to these concerns MPs announced that the Commons Transport Committee would be examining whether the new swerve manoeuvre, which requires testers to come to a sudden stop after turning sharply around traffic cones at a speed of 31 mph, is "safe and appropriate".
Concerns at the dangers presented by this manoeuvre seem to be supported by Driving Standards Agency figures; they show that between the introduction of the new test on April 27 up until June 12, there were 45 motorbike accidents that resulted in testers being treated in hospital for personal injuries. This works out at a rate of nearly 4 in every 1,000 testers - a fairly significant proportion.
The Commons Transport Committee will be asking the following question: "Are the off-road motorcycle tests safe and appropriate? Is the number of motorcycle test centres adequate and are the locations satisfactory?"
