Some fatal motorbike accidents could be avoided by five-star helmets

It is thought that around 50 UK motorbike accident fatalities could be avoided each year if all riders were equipped with the safest available helmets.

This fact is what makes the Department of Transports Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) so important as it allows riders the opportunity to make informed choices about the helmets they wear to protect them from motorbike accident injuries, perhaps helping them prevent serious brain injury or even death.

After delivering the SHARP verdict on 28 new helmets, Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said, "If all riders wore the safest helmets available 50 lives could be saved each year so I am delighted to announce these new SHARP ratings."

The SHARP ratings are considered to be the absolute benchmark in the measure of helmet safety. Although all helmets available for sale in the UK must meet minimum government specifications, SHARP take things several steps further by performing extensive tests on each helmet before providing a rating of between one and five stars.

Of the 28 tested newly tested helmets, only four received a five-star rating. These were the Shark RSX, the Nitro 1700 VF, the Marushin Samura and the Bell M5X. The new ratings bring the total number of SHARP-rated helmets to 128.
