In 2009 it was confirmed that the Welsh county of Powys remains one of the UK's motorbike accident compensation hotspots, a fact long known by no win, no fee solicitors, after Welsh Assembly Government figures revealed that 11.4% of all motorcycle crashes occur there.
Shocking, the figures also revealed that for the sixth consecutive year, more road traffic accidents causing serious or fatal personal injury had occurred in Powys that any other county in Wales.
And, worryingly, the figures reveal that the new, more stringent car driving test brought in for new drivers in 2007 has failed to have an effect in reducing the numbers of young people involved in accidents: one third of all incidents involved drivers between the ages of 16 and 25.
MP for Montgomeryshire, Lembit Opik, commented on the revelations. "These tragic statistics don't surprise me at all. The absence of proper testing facilities and the impatience of younger drivers to get bigger, faster cars leads to the terrible statistics we have here," he said.
Adding, "The problem is that you can't regulate a state of mind. Young drivers, especially young men, see driving fast as a show of bravado and that is the heart of the problem."
"We need to make the drivers safe, not just the cars."
The figures were not all bad news, however. They also showed that the number of recorded road safety incidents in Powys, down to 108 from 125 in 2008.
Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon and Radnorshire was more specific about the kinds of issues that affect motorbike accident compensation claims. "Here in Powys we have some very difficult and complicated roads which even experienced drivers can find treacherous in poor conditions. These roads are even more dangerous for people on motorbikes," he said.
