Although motorbike accident compensation is often sought due to other road users not being aware of bikers, motorcyclists sometimes neglect to obey the rules of the roads themselves.
It is a commonly believed myth that motorbikes can't be caught by speed cameras. However, although some speed cameras struggle to capture motorcyclists' number plates, it is a large risk to take as other cameras and methods are more than capable of catching those who speed.
In October 2008, the police caught a motorcyclist who was captured on speed camera films on six different occasions. Although the speed cameras were front facing and the registration plate was not visible, the police found another way to identify him.
The police used an expert who usually helped to identify murderers and armed robbers from CCTV footage. He examined each of the images taken from the speed camera and identified similarities such as a missing fairing bolt on the motorbike in each one.
Similarities were also discovered in the biker's clothing. One of the photographs showed the biker doing an 82mph wheelie in a 30mph zone. He was given 39 points on his licence, 6 for each driving offence as well as 3 penalty points for driving without control. On top of that, he was banned for 18 months and fined £600.
The motorcyclist was caught after he was stopped by police for an unrelated incident and was matched up to the photographs.
Speed limits are put in place to ensure road users drive at a suitable speed for the road conditions. Neglecting to conform to national speed limits can endanger not only the life of the motorcyclist, but also of others using the road.
