Each year motorbike accidents claim hundreds of lives in the Greater London area. According to experts, including psychologists, many of these collisions are caused by a misleading optical effect.
The effect, which has been exhaustively documented, results in motorists thinking that motorcycles have longer to reach them than cars, even when approaching from the same position and at identical speeds.
Psychologists refer to this optical illusion as the "size-arrival effect". It has been most significantly documented in the study ‘Motorcycle accident risk could be inflated by a time to arrival illusion' - Horswill, Helman, Ardiles & Wann. Optometry and Vision Science, August 2005. The results of this effect can be catastrophic, with many motorcycle crashes caused by drivers failing to correctly assess the distance of riders.
Accidents of this nature have been of particular concern in London, where in 2009 Tfl (Transport for London) aired television advertisements urging motorists to "give motorcyclists a second thought".
At the time of the campaign, Chris Lines, Head of the London Road Safety Unit at TfL, commented, "Motorcyclists are amongst the most vulnerable of London's road users. In 2007 there were 4,856 collisions in greater London involving powered two-wheelers.
"A total of 944 of these collisions resulted in a death or serious injury." Needless to say many of these incidents end up being referred to the motorbike accident claim departments of London no win, no fee solicitor firms.
While the owner of a Greater London motorbike seller added his thoughts, "Car drivers can't register the speed at which smaller objects are coming towards them properly," he said.
Adding, "A small object looks like it's travelling slower than it really is. So if you've got a car and a bike both going at 30 miles, the car will look like it's approaching you faster than the bike.
"That's why all motorcyclists ride with their lights on, for extra visual effect."
