DfT statistics and motorbike accident claims with YouClaim

In 2008, 1.4 percent of motorcycle riders failed a breathalyser test after a motorbike accident, claimed the Department for Transport in the 2009 edition of the Compendium of Motorcycling Statistics.

This was just one of the key findings published in October 2009, encompassing all types of two-wheeled motorised vehicles, with statistics presented under four headings:

  1. Motorcyclists - Motorbike training and ownership statistics;

  2. Motorcycles - Vehicle information and motorbike characteristics;

  3. Journeys made - Numbers of, purpose and characteristics;

  4. Motorcycling safety - Statistics on road traffic accidents involving motorbikes, and associated casualties.

Key motorbike findings:

  • In 2008, just less than three percent of UK households owned at least one motorbike.

  • In 2008/09, 105 thousand motorcycle tests were taken - 85 percent of that figure were taken by men.

  • In Great Britain in 2008, there were approximately 1.3 million licensed motorcycles in the UK.

  • There was an estimated 3.6 percent of actively used motorbikes which were unlicensed - this was a fall from 9.8 percent in 2007.

  • More than one million motorcycle MOT tests were undertaken in 2008/09, with 81 percent passing - this figure has remained fairly stable for the past ten years.

  • UK motorcyclists rode 5.1 million vehicle kilometres in 2008 - a drop of 8 percent from 2007.

  • In 2008, the number of motorcycle accident deaths or serious injuries was 1,131 per billion km ridden. Ten years earlier this figure was 23 percent higher.

  • The 2008 rate of motorbike accident breath test failures, 1.4 percent, was unchanged from 2007, but was lower than the 2.7 percent of all road users as a whole.
